How many times have you found yourself re-living horrible moments? And how many times have you rolled your eyes, had a sinking feeling in your stomach and realised that you’ve made that same old mistake again?

Sometimes, you have to go back before you can go forwards.Sometimes the answers aren’t out there, they’re inside us.

It’s incredibly frustrating when we realise that we’re stuck in the same old patterns and circles, that we just keep banging our heads against the same old walls.

...The way we respond to challenges or a sense of failure....The kinds of people we’re attracted to and begin relationships with....Using old tools to try to solve new problems, even though we've seen them fail before....Letting people walk all over us.

A problem that a lot of people make is thinking always wrong to open the can of worms that lies hidden in their minds and hearts. All those painful memories, mistakes, moments of embarrassment. Sure, a lot of the time it’s not a good idea to dig that stuff up. When are we safe enough, ready enough, to do that? But if we don't consciously face our inner daemons, we end up being taken to those places at important, high-pressure moments - the old stuff creeps up on us, trips us up at the exact moments when we need to feel strong, free and powerful.

Sooner or later, those memories and feelings will demand your attention.

Brené Brown, whose talks on TED are some of the most popular on the entire site, is a researcher and a storyteller. She did a lot of research into what makes people happy and successful, and she was surprised to find that a lot of it depended on their relationship with shame. Shame being, put briefly, a deeply held, secret belief that if people really saw us, really knew us, they wouldn’t love us.

As counterintuitive as it might seem, that’s how deep we sometimes need to go before we can shine in our lives.

In order to thrive in the world, in order to reach any goals that are around joy and peace and fulfillment, you’re going to need to deal with those daemons that you keep hidden away. The only way out is through.

But there are tools to do that, and there’s support out there.

Brené Brown has written a few books that equip you with surprising, but really powerful, tools to fight those things that trip you up.

Her next book is about to come out and I’m excited to see what new approaches and ideas she’s going to give us. If what I’m saying has touched you, intrigued you or stirred something up inside you, head over and give it a read.

And if you’re looking for support, the kind of deep coaching I offer might be right for you...
